Birds, Hikes, Picnic!

Choose Your Adventures on National Trails Day, June 2 with the Land Trust
  • Beginner's Bird walk. Sun. June 2, 7:30-9 am Family Bird Walk led by Land Trust Director Sarah Faulkner. How to identify birds. Join the Canton Land Conservation Trust and the Hartford Audubon Society for a 1+ hour beginner’s bird walk at the Sun, Wind and Woodland Trails. You’ll be introduced to birdwatching and learn about apps on your phone to help you recognize birds. We’ll look for birds, discuss the ecosystem, and enjoy being in nature. Easy slow walking, about 1/2  to 1 mile in total in this beautiful CLCT preserve. Bring binoculars, smart phone, sturdy sneakers, insect repellent, water, and snack. Children ages 6 and older are welcome. The leader will have some binoculars to loan to participants if needed. Email leader Sarah Faulkner to register ([email protected]). Please load the app “Merlin” before coming, as well as “eBird”.  Both are free from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.
  • Hike the Gorgeous Woods of Canton. Sun. June 2, noon-2 pm. Join the Canton Land Conservation Trust on a 2-3 mile hike at its Sun, Wind and Woodland Trails led by Land Trust Directors Nate Cantwell and Sarah Faulkner. We’ll follow the scenic easy/moderate trails, stopping periodically to share some of the history of the property. The hike will start at the Sun, Wind, and Woodlands Trails parking area on Breezy Hill Road in Canton. Hikers should wear sturdy shoes and bug spray, bring water and a snack, and please leave dogs at home. Questions? Email [email protected].
  • Explore the Pratt Preserve’s Trails. Sun June 2, 2:30 - 3:30 pm. Join the Canton Land Trust for a self-guided hike on the Waquaheag Trail on our Pratt Preserve. Come to the preserve between 2:30 and 3:30 pm on Sunday, June 2nd and receive directions from a Board member, then follow the clearly blazed trail on this stunning property. The trail is about 1 mile in length and moderate in difficulty. Start by crossing the bridge over Cherry Brook and choosing your own direction on the loop trail. Please return before 4:00 and join the Board for the CLCT for our annual meeting at the Pratt Cabin. Hikers should wear sturdy shoes and bug spray, bring water and a snack, and please leave dogs at home. The Pratt Preserve is located at 84 Cherry Brook Road. Park either in the small parking area on Cherry Brook Road, or follow the driveway down to another parking area further down the hill. Questions? Email [email protected].
  • Annual picnic at Pratt Cabin in Pratt Preserve. Sun. June 2, 4 pm. The picnic will follow a brief annual meeting to elect next year's officers and directors. The Land Trust board will provide hot dogs and burgers, and attendees are invited to bring side dishes or desserts.
